Bank and brokerage referral bonuses work differently from a coupon. Nothing is discounted at checkout. Instead the provider pays a cash bonus into your new account after you complete a qualifying action, which almost always means depositing a set amount and leaving it there for a defined period. The bonus arrives days or weeks later, not instantly.
That structure is why the dollar figures look large. A $50 Tangerine bonus requires a $250 deposit held for 60 days. A $20 EQ Bank bonus requires $100 funded within 30 days of activation. The Interactive Brokers offer is larger still but is only open to an eligible new U.S. client, not a Canadian one. Reading the qualifying action matters more than comparing headline numbers.
Every finance offer below is a chequing, savings, spending or self-directed investing account rather than a credit product. Credit-card referral offers are deliberately not listed on this site, so nothing here is opened through a hard credit inquiry.
Several do, and the amounts move constantly. The listings on this page show what was advertised on the provider's own referral terms on the date shown beside each offer. For a Canadian resident, Tangerine and Questrade currently sit at the top of the cash range here, with Wealthsimple and EQ Bank lower but with smaller deposit requirements. The larger Interactive Brokers figure is not comparable because it is open to an eligible new U.S. client rather than a Canadian one.
A referral bonus is separate from a bank's own public promotion. Banks frequently run a general new-client offer at the same time as a refer-a-friend program, and the two usually cannot be combined. If a provider is advertising a large seasonal promotion on its homepage, compare it against the referral bonus here before choosing which route to open the account through.
Threads about referral codes tend to accumulate stale numbers. A post quoting a $75 or $100 bonus may be a year old, may describe a limited-time promotion that has ended, or may describe a different account type than the one the code actually applies to. Codes themselves also expire when a program changes.
Rather than trusting a quoted figure, check three things: the account type the offer applies to, the qualifying deposit and holding period, and the date the offer was last confirmed. Each listing on this page states all three, and links to the provider's own terms page so you can verify the current version yourself before depositing anything.
Each offer carries the date it was last checked against the provider's official referral terms. A code being present here is not a guarantee the program has not changed since that date — referral programs are altered without notice, and a provider can pause one entirely.
If a code is rejected during signup, it usually means one of three things: the program has changed, the account type you selected is not eligible, or you are not a new client under the provider's definition. Several programs, including Shakepay, allow a referral to be attached shortly after signup, so it is worth checking your account's referral screen before assuming the bonus is lost.
