Why a Rakuten purchase does not track, and what to do about it

Cashback tracking depends on an unbroken chain from Rakuten's link to the retailer's checkout. Anything that interrupts it costs the credit even though you completed the purchase: another coupon extension replacing the tracking link, an ad blocker, arriving from an email or a search result instead of from Rakuten, switching to the retailer's mobile app mid-purchase, or a browser aggressively blocking third-party cookies.

Category exclusions are the other common cause. Gift cards, certain third-party marketplace sellers, subscription renewals and orders paid partly with store credit are frequently excluded, and the exclusions are set by the retailer rather than by Rakuten. Codes posted in forum threads, comment sections and aggregator lists go stale in predictable ways. The program itself changes and the old reward no longer exists. The code belongs to a promotion that ran in a different country or province. The person who posted it hit their referral cap. Or the thread is simply old enough that everything in it has been replaced at least once.

The number quoted alongside a code is the part that ages worst. A thread confidently describing a larger bonus is usually describing a limited-time promotion that has since ended, and reading it now produces the impression that a current, working offer is somehow inferior or fake.
